APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY & MENTOR-RELATED QUESTIONS
What kind of research does AASLD Foundation fund?
We support all hepatology-related research. Preferential funding is not given to specific areas or topics, unless through an established donor-directed funding mechanism (e.g., Autoimmune Liver Diseases Exploratory Research Award, Gupta Family Pilot Award in PSC Research).
My funding request doesn’t fall under any of the AASLD Foundation programs posted online. How do I submit it?
AASLD Foundation does not accept funding requests outside of our posted funding mechanisms.
How can I determine if I’m eligible to apply for an AASLD Foundation Award?
All current programs have applications posted on the AASLD Foundation website. Refer to the RFA for each award to review detailed eligibility criteria specific to that mechanism. Eligibility questions should be referred to awards@aasld.org.
Does the funding I've previously held or currently hold make me ineligible to apply?
Refer to the RFA for each award to review detailed eligibility criteria specific to that mechanism. A list of common programs that may impact your eligibility for funding is available on the AASLD Foundation website. If you have a specific question about a program that is not listed, contact awards@aasld.org to confirm your eligibility.
I am applying for a junior faculty award, if I had a leave of absence does that count towards my eligibility window?
Applicants can request an eligibility extension due to a documented leave of absence by submitting a request to awards@aasld.org prior to application.
Do I need to be an AASLD member to apply?
Unless otherwise noted in the RFA, all applicants and their mentor (or co-mentor, if applicable) must be members of AASLD at the time of application and maintain their membership for the duration of the award.
If the applicant and/or mentor (or co-mentor) is not an active member, they will be contacted by staff to apply for membership prior to their application being submitted for consideration. Failure to meet the membership requirement will result in your application being withdrawn.

Is research funding available for international applicants?
AASLD Foundation currently funds investigators performing research in North America (USA, Canada, Mexico).
International researchers must have the appropriate visa to work and perform research in the North American country in which the project will be performed that is valid for the duration of the award term.
Research being conducted outside of North America is not eligible for funding at this time.
Can I apply to more than one program at a time?
You can only apply for one research award each calendar year.
Fellows in a 4th year transplant hepatology program or 3rd year dual GI/Transplant Hepatology combined program may apply both for the Advanced/Transplant Hepatology Fellow Award and for one research award mechanism in a single calendar year, if eligible.
My previous application was not funded. Can I apply again?
Yes, you can reapply for any program as long as you remain eligible for that funding mechanism.
Do I need an AASLD member mentor to apply?
Unless otherwise noted in the RFA, all applicants and their mentor (or co-mentor, if applicable) must be members of AASLD at the time of application and maintain their membership for the duration of the award.
If the applicant and/or mentor (or co-mentor) is not an active member, they will be contacted by staff to apply for membership prior to their application being submitted for consideration. Failure to meet the membership requirement will result in your application being withdrawn.

Can my mentor be located at a different institution?
Applicants are strongly encouraged to identify a primary mentor located at their institution. In the event that an applicant has a primary mentor located at a different institution, their application must explicitly describe how regular collaboration will be arranged.
Are co-mentors allowed?
Yes, multiple mentors are permitted. One mentor should be identified as your primary mentor who will be the main contact on the award and will be responsible for submitting the mentor letter of recommendation. Biosketches for all mentors/co-mentors should be included in the application.
